Looking at the AOTD makes me wonder...

Why do so many people think the Aztek is a bad car? It is ugly, sure. No one is denying that. But it is far from a bad car. They're reliable and very safe (I can't remember which one, but I know it just obliterated everything else in its class in at least one crash test by a huge margin, or something like that) and just... they're seriously good cars.

At this point it's just a meme that lost its original meaning long ago. Personally, the 12-year-old in me (who, if I'm honest, dominates my personality) LOVES the idea of the hatch tent and would want to camp out on my driveway every other night :)

no, they are bad cars that happen to be using very proven engines and transmissions.

I always thought we were more about practicality on here thus our love for wagons/hatchbacks/small pickups but then we hate things like this. It doesn't make sense

It's ugly as sin, I've always wanted to push one off a cliff because I hate it so much.

I'd drive one.

4WD only though. Would make for a decent winter beater/utility/camping vehicle.

Yep. As much as I hate the design, it's up there with the Element, Vanagon and Eurovan in versatility.

Who doesn't want a car with a tent? Communists, that's who.

Because other engines don't knock it, it's own engine is the one that Knocks.

Call me crazy, but that's one colour it looks rather good in!

The Aztek was not a looker. It is/was a good car. It's quirkiness will probably make it collectible. The looks are probably why dealers face them opposite of other cars

I don't think it's ugly.

It was ahead of its time. When it hit the market, it was horrifyingly ugly, but SUVs were still SUVs, the CUV craze hadn't started. It was too...there's a better word, but "soft" for the time. In today's market though, it fits right in. It's a little bit odd looking, but that's perfect for today's CUV market

I would need to do some research, but I think you are on target.

I've been saying it for a while, the Azteck was ahead of its time. It would be a smash hit in today's CUV market

If it weren't a Pontiac, from the "we build excitement" division, would it have been as universally poorly received? It came out with way too much unpainted cladding, which spells and smells of "base model" (same as the first Avalanches), and the wheels are too tiny for the visible mass from a side view. But re-do every visible part of it, and the Buick Rendezvous gets a pass as a normal CUV, without the recognition of being part of the start of the class? Who knows... GM had a way to screw up minivan platforms.
